Michael Kuyucu’a article printed in the peer-reviewed journal of TRT AKADEMİ. In the article “The Problematic of The Standardization in Turkish Popular Music From the View of Theodor W. Adorno” Michael underlined the standardiztion of popular Turkish music.
In the study the standardization and reduction in the quality of the popular music produced in Turkey were empha-sized from the perspective of Theodor W. Adorno’s popular music criticize. In the first part of the study, a conceptual study was conducted in connection with the critics of Theodor W. Adorno, one of the theoreticians in Frankfurt School, addressed at the culture industry and the popular music that is a part of it. In the second part of the study, the relationship suggested by Ritzer between the standardization and McDonaldization and popular music has been studied. In the research part of the study, popular music works produced in Turkey were studied and analyzed. A content analysis was conducted on the lyrics of the top ten songs that were on air in the radio stations between the dates of July 27th and August 2th 2015, and the standardization experienced in the “main theme” of lyrics was underlined. In the conclusion of the study, it was emphasized that music works produced in Turkey and consumed by large masses are put into the market as products that are based on standard main themes and rhythms and the music industry encourage quick and serial consumption through McDonaldization. In addition, a determination were made in connection with the industrial-social and common risks of this standardization in music. Click to read the article of Michael Kuyucu
